Blog #3

Sunburst! I took the four-star image and only repeated it three times. The difference was the rotation of the image and overlapping.

While I was creating this design, my mind was drawn to a night's sky. At night some stars appear larger than others depending on the distance from land. Also, night can also portray a peaceful escape/atmosphere. I decided to include the word "serenity" because I believe its placement fit perfectly into the design.

Strength-Here I took a set of 13 four-stars. Each layer had three identical starts that were equally rotated. There were four layers and the top was one star. The top star has an increased outline to emphasis strength. The next two layers have a semi-increased outline and the last stayed the same.

Word Portrait

This exercise was very interesting, more psychological than anything. I found myself wanted to use the actual font names as examples. For example, the "Chiller" font-  I wanted to use the word Chiller! Or I was drawn to using synonyms to the font names. Once I was able to think of my first example, my second example was very similiar, and the last was a complete antonym of the first two. I really enjoyed this exercise because it forced me to think outside of the box in creating word representations.

  1. Anita,

I love how you used the star to accomplish the three themes above! I'll share that I was going to do that exercise, but I struggled to find a way to incorporate it into each of the themes. Your use of it here has got my wheels turning and I just might go back and play some more with it. Since you also did the font activity, I'm curious, was your font choice for Serenity impacted by what you learned in the font activity? If so, did you try several fonts to find the right one or did you instinctively know which one you wanted?

With regards to the font activity, I appreciate the thoughts you shared. I found myself wanting to be creative to find a 3 word phrase that accomplished these goals (first two with a similar meaning and the third word the opposite) but had a bit of writers block.

I'm also curious - what is the font you used for Childhood? I really like it!

    Great post!

    Best,

    Steve

  2. Hi Anita,

You did a great job on your post. I love your designs with the stars – my favorite is Strength. What program / tool did you use? You have your images in black and white – is it on purpose or for convenience? I can imagine that you last image can be very beautiful in monotone colors but with different value or it also can be fancy and multicolored.

I also like your choice of fonts and interpretations – I agree with many of your words there, such as Childhood, but some words I see differently, such as your Formal looks casual to me ☺.

    Well done.

  3. Hi Anita,
I also really like your star designs. I agree that Serenity really fit the second design. Like Natalia, I am also curious to know what program you used to create these images.
I at first struggled like you did when trying to find words to use for the fonts. I also found it difficult to stray away from the font names. This activity really made me realize how important font choices can be in design.
